Q1: Is the AVUS really a race track?

DJ: Well, that is certainly a tough question to start. AVUS has a start/finish line, some tarmac, walls, and at least a few turns, so I guess that’s a race track :-).  Certainly not a “drivers” track!

Q2: Do you fly flight simulators on occasion? And if so, did that experience help here?

DJ: Absolutely, love flight sims! But I don’t think it really helped much, maybe I should have practiced some “rush hour gridlock commuting in a big city sim”.

Q3: Did you run any grill tape? And if yes, how much?

DJ: Grill tape was the biggest question for me going into the race. Did a lot of testing leading up to the race to explore what was possible. Only a couple degrees of ambient temperature difference completely changed how much tape was possible to run. The other big question mark was the draft/following other cars closely, and how much that would influence heating. After the first few runs during the official practice it was decided to be aggressive and run 20% tape in the race. Tried to keep one eye on the temp while racing, only saw it creeping up a couple times, and then just short shifted a few times and popped my nose out into clean air to keep it under control.

In the end, it all came down to that last straight. I didn’t get my timing right and was at the end of the line going in, but sometimes luck just finds you and in this case, it was the place to be.

Q1: Is the AVUS really a race track?

JF: Well, barely. Even with cars from 1980, it feels like an anachronism. I understand that it had relevance in the 1920’s when it was built, but feels very much out of place on the European road racing calendar. Racing BMW M1 Procar’s there is about as fitting as racing a group C car at Talladega…

Q2: Do you fly flight simulators on occasion? And if so, did that experience help here?

JF: I used to do a bit of flight sims, especially the IL2 Sturmovik series and Rise of Flight. Did formation flying there make me more comfortable at AVUS? Maybe.

Q3: Did you run any grill tape? And if yes, how much?

JF: I did a lot of testing with grill tape settings to get the most out of the car. I noticed that the draft didn’t really affect engine heat, so I had no problem running 20% grill tape.

Q1: Is the AVUS really a race track?

GR: I’d say anything can be made a race track with the proper imagination. Avus makes you think differently, play the long game and make you take your move in the last moments, something I’m trying to teach myself for ovals this coming year.

GR: I played Ace Combat on the PS1 when I was like 9 but that’s about it. I’m sure the flight aviators around here would argue it definitely would have helped.

Q3: Did you run any grill tape? And if yes, how much?

GR: I was planning on running 20%, I could of too. But I decided against it and went with 10% for safe keeping. I planned on using the draft and a lower gear ratio to get more top speed in the race and played it safe!
